Hate speech is something nobody would want to wish on anybody. Some people experience hate speech more than others. Some of us, may not even experience hate speech. I think even though some people have not experienced hate speech themselves does not mean that they do not "get it". We have all heard of the idea of hate speech. If you have not heard of hate speech let me inform you. Hate speech is something that was said that can hurt someone, either physically or emotionally. When someone yells "bomb" on an airplane, people could get hurt for trying to get off the plane. There are things people should not say under certain circumstances. You never know if you mention gays, there could be someone around who may be hurt by this. Just like what Kobe Bryant recently said about gay to the referee. There are just comments that cannot be tolerated. We all know not to yell fire in a movie theater. People could be seriously injured from this made up comment. Even though some have not experienced hate speech first hand, does not mean we don't get it.
Everyone has either heard about the idea of hate speech, or have actually been through it. Either way we know how serious hate speech can be. We know exactly know what to say and what not to say. There may be some people out there who find the idea of hate speech funny, which is those people that make those comments. Those are the people "who don't get it" not the people that have not experienced it. People who don't experience hate speech stay away from those comments because they don't want that to happen to them, and they don't make the comments. Some people that haven't experienced it know people that have. So maybe they do not know it feels personally, but the still know what goes on. So people still knows what goes on. We don’t have the right to judge people because of their past. If they were one of the lucky ones that didn’t experience hate speech, be happy for those people.
Hate speech is not something we wish on anybody. So why would we think that people who don't experience it don't get it? We should be happy that those people haven't experienced it. People that have experienced it should be telling those people how to handle a situation when hate speech occurs so they don't get hurt. There are things that we all need to learn. People should know what to expect. Hate speech is wrong and we all know that. So lets take this problem seriously and not be so judgmental. If we judge people because they don’t have a past with hate speech, was does that say about us? It makes us no better than those people who say hate speech. Both ways it’s not right and we all need to be here for each other, for the better. We are all civil human beings and should be able to help a neighbor in a time of need.
I believe that hate speech shouldn't be tolerated either. It is evident in every-one's experiences that hate speech can be harmful words. The sticks and stones idiom is simply not true. harmful speech are words that may result to hurt emotions and instigated fights. You mentioned that the people that use “hate speech” are the people that do not get it, and that’s probably why they use that type of speech. I disagree. I believe that everyone is capable of “hate speech” regardless of any-one's experiences. It’s possible that someone that has been a victim of hate speech to use hate speech knowing how hurtful it might be; they may have insecurities and they use “hate speech” to bring themselves up and others down. Well, it’s really hard to say; but it’s a possibility.
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned the incident that happened to Kobe Bryant a few nights ago, I saw that game and I didn’t think much of it. I thought it was the right thing to do to give Kobe a fine to pay, but I just didn’t like how the ESPN media covered it, they extend everything out of proportion just for entertainment and views; that’s another story however. The Kobe Bryant incident with his technical is an example of how our society tolerates political correctness. Hate speech isn’t tolerated in our society, and whoever does it is frowned upon. This is a good thing. Hate speech is a horrible form of speech, and I think it should be limited, restricted, and regulated to protect ourselves and preserve our society.
I would agree with you that just because we haven’t experienced a certain kind of Hate Speech that we “just don’t get it” because for the most part I think people realize the significance of what they are saying and whether it is hateful or not. That being said I don’t think there is anybody on earth who hasn’t experienced some form of hate speech or another. There are derogatory terms and hate speech attached to every race, religion, gender, culture and so on. So no matter what group you are in, somewhere in your life you will experience hate speech in some form or another. I think just because someone doesn’t “get it” I still think they should be held accountable for what they say. We all have an idea of what is hurtful and what isn’t so we all need to take personal responsibility for what we say and who we say it to. I have patience with the use of hate speech from children because they truly don’t know any better, and it is our duty to inform them if what they said was hate speech, as well as explain to them the significance of hate speech. Other than that, I think hate speech is obvious and people should be held accountable for what they say, regardless if the “get it” or not.
ReplyDeleteI have been a target for an endless barrage of racial insults for a number of years due to my mixed ethnicities, predominantly African-American and Japanese. Although people have no right to judge other people, it still happens anyway because it is human nature to judge other people, even I am guilty of doing so. Also hate speech is born out of either ignorance or just plain stupidity that lies within a large number of people within our society, which is rather unfortunate but is prominent issue that still holds relevance of being a key factor in hate speech.
ReplyDeleteAs for not wishing for hate speech on anybody, that is not entirely true, there are people that are bitter from being bombarded by hate speech often wish that the offenders gets shot at by hate speech in order to make them feel inferior for putting other people down. As for being happy for those whom have not experienced hate speech I cannot be happy for them, I actually believe that is unfair being that they never had to experience hate speech but had to put up that crap for years on end. What have I done to be treated so badly? I do not know. But I know how to sniff out hate speech, the type of people who shoot it off, and how to counter it tenfold granted from being a subject to hate speech for many years.
